RUN FLAT TYRES
SSR – Self Supporting Runflat Tyres
Changing a tyre on the side of the road is no walk in the park. Throw in running late to drop the kids off at school, a management meeting that you cannot afford to miss, fast moving traffic and bad weather, and it’s enough to have the most considerate drivers striving for calm. In addition to this, any combination of these factors could lead to a nerve-wrecking, unpleasant and even highly dangerous situation.
Now a loss of tyre pressure is no pressure at all. Continental has developed a concept to keep you moving even if your tyre has a puncture – the Continental Self Supporting Runflat (SSR) tyre, a technological concept that allows you to continue your journey in safety in the event of a sudden loss of pressure.
When a traditional tyre experiences a sudden loss of tyre pressure, the rim of the wheel brings the full weight of the vehicle to bear on the collapsed sidewalls. Once the sidewalls collapse, the vehicle can barely be manoeuvred and the tyres are destroyed after a short distance.

SSR technology in turn promotes maximum safety in the event of a pressure loss. The secret of the SSR tyre lies in the reinforced sidewalls of the tyre. The reinforced sidewalls supports the rim, should the tyre suffer a loss of tyre pressure, and prevents the tyre walls from becoming squashed between the wheel rim and the road.

As SSR tyres offer a very high standard of driving comfort, the driver will barely notice any loss of pressure in the tyre. For this reason, Continental SSR tyres may only be used on vehicles equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system, which will display the drop in tyre pressure on the dashboard instrument panel.
In the event of a loss of tyre pressure, SSR tyres allow drivers to continue their journey, providing that the vehicle is driven at a reduced speed (depending on the road conditions and the weight of your vehicle) up to a distance of 80 kilometres at a maximum speed of 80 km/h. This reduces the risk of danger and stressful situations in the event of a tyre puncture. This means continued mobility thanks to reinforced sidewalls.
Important note:
SSR tyre may only be fitted on vehicles equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system. The run flat properties of SSR tyres are so effective that you may not notice your tyres are deflated. Continental SSR tyres must only be used in conjunction with a fully functioning tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and should only be fitted to vehicles for which they are approved by the vehicle manufacturer.
